Somewhere to work and also to play. Somewhere to reflect, or run about and yell. Somewhere to learn. Somewhere to heal. All of these places are needed - but not often found - in the gardens of schools and universities, hospitals and hospices.

These gardens differ in very important respects from the domestic garden and the public park, although they may be composed of elements of each. They are complex gardens that can absorb as well as evoke emotion, and offer a powerful transformative effect.

The garden designer is uniquely qualified to tackle transitions of scale, create an environment that holds secrets and tells many stories, and reveal the multi-sensory potential of spaces. Our line-up of international speakers will also reveal the cultural differences in perception and approach to the design of these socially important gardens.

Marni Barnes is a practising landscape architect and psychotherapist in California. Her practice designs and consults on the creation of healing landscapes, and she also researches and writes about emotional health and outdoor environments. She has won several awards for her work. Marni has co-authored two books on therapeutic gardens in healthcare facilities, the most recent being ‘Healing Gardens: Therapeutic Benefits and Design Recommendations’ with Clare Cooper Marcus.

Helle Nebelong is a Danish landscape architect. Her practice specialises in the design of natural spaces for children, young disabled people and the elderly. Helle is President of the Danish Playground Association, and Vice-President of International Play Association Denmark. Since 2007 she has been a member of the leadership team for the Nature Action Collaborative for Children, NACC. www.sansehaver.dk

Dan Pearson is a British landscape and garden designer with an international reputation. His practice handles a wide range of domestic and international projects for private and public clients including private gardens, public spaces, architectural landscaping, public parks and civic plantings. Dan will be talking about his recently completed garden for Maggie’s Centre, London. www.danpearsonstudio.com

Wendy Titman runs a research, training and development consultancy championing the significance of the outdoor learning environment for young children, and is the author of ‘Special Places; Special People – the hidden curriculum of school grounds’. Working throughout the UK, she creates innovative designs and monitors the impacts these places have on the whole school community.
