The work of Andrea Cochran sculpts and navigates space through a seamless integration of landscape, art and architecture. Her work draws boundaries with a controlled palette of materials, creating permeable edges that blur the line between the natural and the built environment. Spare geometry applied to vibrant plant life results in sharp compositional order. This exercise in restraint heightens a sense of the elements – texture, light and movement.

Due to unforseen circumstances Dr Nigel Dunnett will now be presenting in place of Patrick Blanc.

Nigel Dunnett is Professor of Planting Design and Vegetation Technology at the University of Sheffield. Nigel works with ecologically-tuned approaches to planting design that create exuberant, uplifting and joyous emotions, and fully immersive experiences in designed landscapes. He developed the concept of ‘Pictorial Meadows’ and has worked extensively to apply creative planting ideas on, around and between buildings, with particular focus on green roofs, rain gardens, and other water-sensitive design features. With his colleague, James Hitchmough, he developed the plantings in the London 2012 Olympic Park, and has regularly exhibited gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show that combine ecological principles with design innovation.

The event will be chaired by Brita von Schoenaich, Dip Hort Kew, MLI. Brita studied landscape design in Germany after training as a gardener. In 1984 she completed studies at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, then followed up with a degree in landscape architecture in the UK. Her studio has worked with many leading architects on new developments, residential and urban schemes. She introduced the concept of continental, contemporary planting via international conferences and lectures and her own work, contributing to a change in British attitudes towards planting design and developed strategies for urban vegetation. Her approach to design is intuitive, responding to architecture as well as surroundings. Her team’s background in horticulture has allowed them to develop pioneering planting concepts and their work is widely published. At Kew Gardens she has tutored students in landscape design for over a decade and is external examiner at the Inchbald School on behalf of the University of Wales. http://www.schoenaich.co.uk/ Image
