Adjudication Classes

What are these?

A series of these will be run in the London area during 2013. Dates and venues to be announced.

Adjudication Classes are designed to ‘trouble-shoot’ those areas where candidates most commonly do not reach the required standard at Adjudication. The Classes are intermediate level and are therefore not suitable for students or those that have not yet started designing gardens.

The Classes will assist designers who:

Have completed several design commissions and want to work towards Registration &/or
Have already attended a Project Appraisal and it has been suggested that there are certain areas that need to be strengthened &/or
Have attended an Adjudication and either been Referred or Failed.

Who can attend them:

Pre Registered Members of the Society

What are the topics:

Designing with levels (including where and how to take levels when surveying)
Good design principles.
Planting plans.
Construction and construction drawings.
Setting out drawings, contracts and specifications.

Where will they be held

London - venue tba

Maximum no of candidates per class:

Ten (10).

Your reservation will be acknowledged upon receipt and the event is confirmed once sufficient reservations have been received to make it viable.

2013

DESIGNING WITH LEVELS

1 day

To demonstrate where best to place the Datum and where to take levels when surveying.
To ensure that candidates understand how to design a site that has different levels.
To include steps, retaining walls, ‘cut and fill’, falls, dpcs, and drainage.
To ensure that candidates know how to notate a plan with existing and new levels and how to use hierarchy of line to show changes in level.
To show candidates the areas where Adjudicators most commonly find errors in presented work.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

1 day

To ensure that candidates know what good design principles are and that they are applying them in their designs e.g. scale/proportion, symmetry/asymmetry, mass/void.
To ensure that informal gardens using curves avoid pitfalls such as ‘pinch points’.
To hi-light the importance of ‘fit of purpose’ materials.
To give the candidates an overview of what adjudicators are looking for and highlight common mistakes.

SETTING OUT DRAWIINGS, CONTRACTS & SEPCIFICATIONS

2 days

To ensure that candidates know how to produce a clear Setting Out drawing
To ensure that candidates are producing full, professional Specifications that can be used if a job goes out to tender.
To ensure that candidates are dealing with clients in a professional manner especially regarding fees, work covered and Terms and Conditions.
To ensure that candidates are aware of how the SGD’s Code of Conduct affects their work practices.
To give the candidates an overview of what adjudicators are looking for and highlight common mistakes

CONSTRUCTION & CONSTRCUTION DRAWINGS

2 days

To ensure that candidates are clear about the type of features/structures that need to be detailed and that those drawings contain the necessary information.

To cover the topics where most problems occur ie:

Poorly designed water features
Detailing on paving, joint patterns, repeat intersections.
Information on how things are jointed/attached.
Information on the grade of materials to be used and treatments.

PLANTING PLANS

1 day

To ensure that candidates are aware of both the horticultural and aesthetic reasons for choosing plants, can apply these principles to their designs, justify their choices and produce a clear and readable planting plan.
To ensure that candidates understand plant sizes and planting distances
To include topics such as planting hedgerows and meadows.
