Conference Spring 2010

   Splash SGD Spring Conference 2010

  Splash!

 Saturday 17th April 2010

Imperial College, South Kensington, London SW7 1LU

Water in the landscape and garden affects the sense of place and our emotional response to it. There are many different ways of using water in the design of landscapes and gardens: as a light reflecting surface, for its sound effects, to bring cooling qualities, as a form of cleansing and as a sustainable part of a design. As an element of garden design, water can have cultural significance as well as its own aesthetic. Water can add a sense of drama or induce a sense of calm and well-being - a truly versatile element.

Splash! is designed to 'make waves'. The speakers are linked by a strong thread of innovation in their varied use of water in both domestic gardens and public spaces.

  THE SPEAKERS

Sarah Eberle is a Landscape Architect by training but a Garden Designer by inclination. Her ‘Life on Mars’ garden won Best in Show at the 2007 Chelsea Flower Show; as a result she became Landscape Consultant to The Mars Foundation... thankfully, no site visits required! www.saraheberle.com

Raymond Jungles is a Miami based Landscape Architect with almost 30 years experience. Water is an integral part of his award–winning work and combined with a thorough understanding of Florida’s native flora, his work exhibits a unique passion for the exploration of relationships between the natural and built environments. www.raymondjungles.com

Wolfram Kircher gained practical experience of working in nurseries prior to his doctoral degree in horticultural sciences and geobotany. His presentation will focus on natural swimming ponds – systems, principles of water filtering and new approaches in planting design related to such features.

William Pye is a sculptor and water has become an integral part of his sculptures. Since the mid 1980’s the majority of his work has incorporated water in a variety of forms including reflection, rollwave patterning on stainless steel, laminar flow through jets and spouts, and vortices. www.williampye.com
