Location: Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens, Stewart Lane, Stillingfleet, York YO19 6HP.
A one day hands on CPD session on photography at Stillingfleet Lodge, where we will have exclusive use of the gardens.
The workshop will use a combination of a presentation, practical work and personal feedback to give designers an understanding of:
- How to achieve good composition using a variety of techniques.
- How to take advantage of different light conditions.
- How to spot the best photographic possibilities in their gardens.
- How to use more advance settings (if available on their cameras), to achieve greater impact in their photos.
Joe is based near Chester and is an award-winning professional garden photographer who works with garden designers, garden owners and organisations including the National Trust and RHS. He has been featured in publications such as: Garden Design Journal, The English Garden, Garden Illustrated and The Garden and in books including those by Tom Stuart Smith, Penelope Hobhouse and Bodnant Garden.
He is a full member of the Garden Media Guild and Professional Garden Photographers’ Association and has won awards in 2022, 2021, 2020, 2018, 2016 and 2015 International Garden Photographer of the Year competitions.

Target audience: This course is suitable for new and practicing garden designers with a range of photographic abilities and experience, using all types of camera – from phones to DSLRs.
Items to bring: Please bring your preferred choice of note taking, camera, iPhone. For those with stand-alone cameras rather than phones, please bring memory cards and a spare battery. It is advisable to wear clothes and footwear suitable for the outdoor photographic session.
Catering: please either bring a flask or cash to purchase tea and coffee from the garden café (tea, coffee, soft drinks and biscuits will be available to buy).
Please also bring your own packed lunch to enjoy in the garden.
