Paving
Overview:
Paving is probably the most prevalent and fundamental of all engineered and constructed features in a garden or landscape. Surfaces can be as simple as gravel over bare earth, as industrial as metal tread mesh on elevated frames and everything in between.
Most paved structures require that the ground is modified to support them. The type of modification, materials and detailing chosen by the designer will impact on the garden space. Traditional approaches to paving construction remain important, but there are often alternatives, to materials and structures while ensuring structural integrity.
This webinar will address the specification of paved surfaces and illustrate common and alternative techniques in their design and construction.
Topics covered
- Types of paved surfaces: Paths, patios, driveways
- Examples of the detailing of paved structures, their buildup and typical construction details (edges, drains, falls, permeability, subbases, and types of materials)
- Alternative techniques and materials to construct bases that prioritise different criteria: no cement, designed for deconstruction, building over RPZs, elevated construction etc
- Fundamental selection criteria for paving:
- Traffic categories, slip resistance, and essential performance criteria
- Details & solutions for demanding situations (eg permeable paving over non permeable
Sample drawings of many of the details and situations discussed will be shown, but due to limitations impose by copyright drawings will not be issued as separate files.
