Timber Structures
Overview:
With the right specification and application of detailing, timber when used in a garden or landscape can be one of the most characterful and evocative of materials. With consideration it can have a long life in service, but often unrealistic expectations are placed on it and while timber is often used both structurally and as a decorative or facing material it relies on fixtures and substructures to retain its integrity and perform as required. The specification of timber is as much to do with the detailing of these elements as the timber components themselves.
This webinar will consider timber as used in freestanding structures such as pergolas and fences, decks and walkways. Details will consider timber in contact with the ground, methods of fastening and designing for maintenance
Timber specification and classifications:
- Strength, use, durability, timber spans
- Suitable types and species of timber
- Treatments
- Walls and cribs
- Pergolas
- Decks and platforms
- Ground connections
- Providence of timber
- Fasteners and fixings
Sample drawings of many of the details and situations discussed will be shown, but due to limitations impose by copyright drawings will not be issued as separate files.
